In August 2023, HousingIS and Azami BV entered into a strategic partnershop to bring Azami's artificial intelligence (AI) data cleansing tool (AIDA) to Australasia and provide a service for community housing providers (CHPs) to de-identify personal information from documents.
Azami focuses on cybersecurity protection, machine learning and AI.
Azami has been working in the Dutch social housing sector since 2017 and has provided data cleansing services to some of the biggest housing associations in the Netherlands, many of whom manage upwards of 10,000 homes.
AIDA can search your digital archives for sensitive content such as passports, BSN numbers and, since the end of 2022, income data. After approval, found content is cleaned and non-essential personal information is cleared from your databases through the AIDA AI tool.
Azami has so far cleared 100 million pages of passports, BSN numbers, income data and other privacy-sensitive European Union General Data Protection Requirements (GDPR) categories for 24 Dutch housing associations using the AIDA tool.
It has deleted more than 3 million personal data items that are no longer needed.
This means that its customers better comply with the EU's GDPR legislation and are better protected against cybercrime. 'Because what you don't have can't be stolen.'
With the recent passing of new privacy legislation in New Zealand and a review of the 1988 Privacy Act currently in progress in Australia, the need for CHPs to regularly review the extent of sensitive information being held in their clients is therefore paramount.
The GDPR provisions are broadly similar in scope to the provisions of the Australian Privacy Act 1998, which is currently under review by the Australian Government (https://www.ag.gov.au/rights-and-protections/publications/privacy-act-review-report). The proposed reforms relating to the Privacy Act are aimed at strengthening both the protection of personal information and the control individuals have over their information.
Furthermore, stronger privacy protections will better support digital innovation, which is especially important in view of the growing awareness in the housing sector as to how digital transformation initiatives could offer additional service delivery channels.
